The headlines of the past weeks are almost impossible to comprehend: “Israel bombs the last functioning hospital in Gaza City,” “Construction of controversial Israeli camp for Palestinians will take at least six months longer than Netanyahu government hopes,” “UN: nearly 800 deaths at food distribution points in Gaza within six weeks.”
It is unbearable. We are talking about camps where Palestinians will be confined, unable to leave. We are talking about Palestinians who must choose between starving or being shot at food distribution sites. We are talking about the most documented genocide we have witnessed. And the EU remains silent.
Today, the association agreement that grants Israel trade advantages on the European market was discussed by the foreign ministers of the 27 member states. I have just read the conclusion, with deep disappointment.
Once again, the EU will not intervene. A wholly inadequate deal between the EU and Netanyahu on “increased humanitarian access for aid supplies” must first determine whether the situation improves at all. More delay. And delay costs lives. Every single day.
Attention on Gaza must not wane. The European Union must mean what it says about human rights and act accordingly. Maintaining the association agreement is indefensible.
