Today, the European Parliament voted with 90.8% support in favor of accelerating the approval and deployment of biocontrol!
A major step toward a healthier, more resilient, and pesticide-free Europe.
Biocontrol solutions use beneficial bacteria, fungi, and naturally occurring organisms to protect crops.
They’re innovative, effective, and dramatically safer for farmers, biodiversity, and our food and water.
But until now, Europe assessed these products as if they were conventional chemical pesticides, resulting in approval times that can stretch up to 10 years.
This vote finally breaks that deadlock.
The Parliament’s adopted text calls for:
- A dedicated EU regulation for biocontrols
- Faster, fit-for-purpose approval pathways
- A priority lane at EFSA with proper funding
- Strong scientific risk assessment
Importantly, the report also makes one thing clear: improving access to biocontrols must not weaken the rules for conventional pesticides.
More biodiversity in the countryside, less harmful chemicals in our food and water, and a safer workplace for all European farmers. This could be the future.
Now the ball is in the court of the European Commission and Member States. The next steps will determine how quickly farmers can access these safer, greener solutions.
