For far too many women and girls, the internet has become a place of intimidation, abuse, and threats. Een onderwerp dat mij na aan het hart ligt, omdat ik dit zelf ook dagelijks ervaar.
A few worrying facts:
- 3 in 5 girls have experienced some form of online sexual harm.
- 85% of young women who face online harassment experience multiple types of abuse; from body shaming to threats.
- 73% of Gen Z users have seen misogynistic content online.
Algorithms amplify hate, sexism and extreme content, as outrage sparks engagement.
Online abuse silences women, harms mental health, and even discourages girls from speaking out.
This report matters because it recognizes that online abuse, from grooming and sextortion to stalking, is a serious problem for women. And it calls on platforms to take responsibility for algorithms that amplify hate and abuse.
